National government Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was reelected President on 8 July 2009 for the second time.
National legislature

The 560-member House of Representatives (DPR) was elected by popular vote on 9 April 2009.  The Regional Representatives’ Assembly (DPD), consisting of 4 representatives from each of the 33 provinces, was also elected by popular vote on 9 April 2009.  The highest constitutional body, the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), which consists of the DPR and the DPD sitting together, is required to meet once every 5 years.  In 2002, a constitutional amendment rendered the MPR of equal status to that of the president and parliament (formerly it had been superior to both).
